Don't Be Like Me

“Don’t Be Like Me”

Don’t be like me
Living in a crazy dream
Like nothing you ever seen
One part nice and the other mean
A stubborn mule
Up a tree
In an alternative reality
Don’t
Be like me
First I fly
Then I fall
Then I smile
Then I crawl
And travel miles
Before I fall
In love...in love
Don’t be like me
Living in a crazy dream
Like nothing you ever seen
One part nice and the other mean
A stubborn mule
Up a tree
In an alternative reality
Don’t
Be like me
Let people in
Then shut ‘em out
Wear yourself thin
Drownin’ in doubt
Have confidence
And shout about
Your destiny from up above
Don’t be like me
Uprooted as can be
Locked out without key
A case of mistaken identity
Running on disbelief
Pretending to be free
Don’t
Be like me
Don’t
be like me
Don’t be like me Uh uh hunh

Dorothy Do-Right

Dorothy Do-Right
Gets lost despite good directions
The evening light
Feels like a new dimension
Atop the hill
She has her fill of good intentions
Dorothy Do-Right
Takes pills and feels less alone
A long drive home
The hills roll on
She belongs to the scarecrows
In groves of trees her mind is free
From everything she knows
Dorothy Do-Right
Does wrong for the first time
When they call
She tells them all she’s doing fine
One person’s right
Another one’s wrong
Such a fine line
Dorothy Do-Right
Her soul pinched in a vice
It’s all downhill
What a thrill
She’s the chill of the morning
There’s more than the sun
And the mist, that rise
In this dawning
Dorothy Do-Right
Just might
Hide herself away
She disappears
When she’s got nothing to say
Right and wrong
Don’t belong
Just get in the way
She slips away
In the wee hours
Between night and day
She slips away
In the wee hours
Between night and day
She slips away
She slips away

No Hunky No Dory

“No Hunky No Dory”
©2019 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
Keeping you happy feels like a chore
We keep riding on love’s see‐saw
I get mad and walk out the door
That’s when you lay down the law
Chorus:
No hunky no dory baby
No lovey no dovey too
The way you treat me
That’s how I’m gonna treat you
Well, What goes around comes around
I won’t be your fool
No hunky no dory baby
Quit being cruel
Every time you blame me
For a stupid fight
You refuse to believe
That I might be right
Chorus
It takes two to wrangle
Takes two to be complete
Takes two to untangle
The bitter from the sweet
Chorus
When you play with love
You must understand
You hold a fragile eggshell
In the palm of your hand
Chorus

She Dodges Raindrops

“She Dodges Raindrops”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
She dodges raindrops
Quick, smart, and free
Splashdowns haunt her
Later
Over tea
The girl dodges raindrops
Newspaper on her head
She can’t apologize
For silly words
She said
Chorus:
Don’t believe what you hear
And less of what you see
She dodges raindrops
That explode
By her feet
You can’t avoid
All of that noise
Of things
You need
To hear
You can’t escape
Harmful shades
Of blame
With raindrop tears
Chorus
She dodges raindrops
One by one
Ducks her head down
While
She runs
The girl dodges raindrops
Instead of having fun
Anticipates the deluge
Before
It has begun
Don’t believe what you hear
And less of what you see
Even when the sky is clear
Raindrops
Set you free
Raindrops
Set you free

Snapping Turtles

“Snapping Turtles”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
If you want to go swimming
There are two ponds
One has mermaids
The other has swans
One is rough
The other is calm
If you’re in a mood
No matter what you do
Try to stay loose
You might win, you might lose
As long as you break through
Then you got the juice
If you want to cool off
Two breezes blow across
One is rough
The other is soft
One is south
The other is north
When you’re misunderstood
Everything seems no good
You’d take it back if you could
Turn the other cheek like you should
When you check under the hood
You better knock on wood
When you want to cry
And you don’t know why
Old rules don’t apply
Oh no, my my my my
Ya know you’re gonna get by
It’s either do or die
When you want to get wet
There are two puddles
One is full of regrets
The other has snapping turtles
Jump over all the hurdles
Appreciate what you get

The River Lily Bloom

“The River Lily Bloom”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
The river lily bloom
Only lasts a week
Taking in the sun
At mid‐day peak
When the currents shift
Under a blue moon
Goodbye
River lily bloom
Goodbye
River lily bloom
No one said
Love would last
Two steps forward
And one step back
A temporary madness
Out of town by noon
Just like
The river lily bloom
Just like
The river lily bloom
First she’ll blush
Then she’ll laugh
Then she shows you
How to have a blast
Sweeter than
The finest perfume
Just like
The river lily bloom
Just like
The river lily bloom
You can’t put the air
Back in a balloon
When you wallow in the mud
Like a buffoon
And it dawns on you
She’s gone too soon
Just like
The river lily bloom
Just like
The river lily bloom

“The Treasure of The Sands”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
Traveling in old Morocco
Chasing a good price
At a campfire in Safi
The music and food were nice
Under the lemon moonlight
The fire crackling loud
When I saw a haunting vision
Moving like a cloud
She dances through a wall of fire
Whirls too fast to see
I wonder if she’s real
And what she wants from me
She bends low
And pulls me to my feet
She says her name is
Inez Lahlou Sadik
The ancient sun has no mercy
You can’t escape from love
Once love sinks its teeth in you
Fates and spirits tug
You have to abandon
All your best laid plans
When Inez Lahlou takes you to
The treasure of the sands
The road is long and dusty
From Tangiers to Safi
The sellers they all know my name
They pretend that they trust me
We sleep in an oasis
In a night that never ends
Inez shows me diamonds
From the treasure of the sands
Then we’re in a cave
High in the holy hills
She asks me if I’m brave
And tells me to be still
When she lifts her veil
And tells me of her plan
She proceeds with every detail
Of her story, “The Sins of Man”
I come to in old Tangiers
A sunny hotel room
The fan whirring overhead
Well past the crack of noon
The scent of the deserts softens the yellow gloom
Of a head jammed up with nightmares
Waking up, too soon
Inez Lahlou Sadik dances every night
Those who make it back at all
Can only talk about the sight
She whirls through a wall of fire
And in the palms of both her hands
She offers gems and jewels
From the treasure of the sands

Thorns

“Thorns Will Have To Do”
©2019 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
The fortune‐teller read my palm
And paused before she spoke
She told me, to stay calm
And never give up hope
Buckets of sorrows come
With a drop of truth
If you can’t have roses
…Thorns will have to do
I got into a fight with love
A long, long time ago
Love, she laughed right in my face
And broke my perfect nose
While blowing deadly kisses
That got me so confused
If you can’t have roses
…Thorns will have to do
You learn about the flip side
When you slip the noose
You can’t trap your lover’s heart
It’s got to be set loose
If you backslide
There is no excuse
If you can’t have roses
Thorns… will have to do
I drank with an aristocrat
At the old Chelsea Hotel
He wanted a favor
And said he’d pay me well
He asked me to find a heart
That always has been true
If you can’t have roses
Thorns, thorns will have to do
When you finally graduate
From idiot to fool
You gain so much more
Than you can ever lose
When wounded red flowers
Start to bleed true‐blue
If you can’t have roses
Thorns, thorns will have to do
If you can’t have roses
Thorns, thorns will have to do

Turpentine

“Turpentine”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
I learned a good lesson
When I made you mine
I best acquire a taste
For turpentine
I know you don’t mean it
With your stop sign
It happens every time
We drink turpentine
Open up
Down she goes
See the fumes
Coming out your nose
You and me, we’re doing just fine
Drinking turpentine
I learned another lesson
In the afternoon
Drinking that turpentine
Ain’t cool
Early in the evening
Is a special time
With a fresh batch
Of turpentine
Hold your nose
Tilt your head
Eyes closed
Now, take your meds
Ah ha ha, It’s party time
Drinking turpentine
Late night lessons that I learned
Play with fire and you get burned
You certainly earn your uphill climb
When you drink turpentine
In the last lesson you’re all mine
Luck is the residue of design
Right now is the time to shine
Drinking turpentine
Open up
Down she goes
See the fumes
Coming out your nose
Right about now
We’re getting close
Pop the cork
Let it flow
Past the lips
Feel the glow
See the fumes
Coming out your nose
You and me, We’re still doing fine
Drinking turpentine

When My Head Explodes
03:35

“When My Head Explodes”
©2020 Tom Deedy and Hugh Birdsall
When my head explodes
The debris it glows
From the top of my crown
Down to my toes
I groove
When my head explodes
Look at what comes out
Splatters all about
From my shattered nose
Yeah the river flows
I dream
When my head explodes
I ain’t fakin’
We are takin’
One helluva chance
I’m absent-minded
Since I collided
With romance
Chorus:
Ooh Ooh
When my head explodes
Ooh Ooh
When my head explodes
When my head explodes
I been thinkin’ ‘bout you
All the way up highs
And all the things we do
At night
When my head explodes
When my head explodes
I’m shoutin’, “Thar she blows”
Now I’m outta my mind
Yup, there she goes
In slow motion
When my head explodes
I ain’t fakin’ no
We are takin’
One helluva chance
I’m absent-minded
Since I collided
With romance
Chorus
When my head explodes
All the gray stuff shows
Yeah, the doors fly open
And they never close
Hey Chuck, don’t forget to duck...
When my head explodes
Chorus
